Elvis bought Graceland for himself and his family in 1957. It was a fulfillment of a childhood promise to his parents, Gladys and Vernon, to buy them the most beautiful house in town. It was a symbol of his success, of how far he had come from his humble beginnings. Elvis loved his home and shared it with his family and friends. You might say that Elvis was Graceland's first tour guide. Graceland opened to the public in 1982.
