As part of its ongoing live on tour series, FTD is pleased to announce the release of ELVIS: LIVE IN VEGAS ‘71. Released as a 3-CD 5” digi-pak, this set features three 1971concerts recorded at the International Hotel on January 27 / 28 (Midnight shows) and January 29 (Dinner show). Recorded by Bill Porter, The tapes unfortunately have imperfections, but we have prioritized the historic importance and rarity of these recordings.

Elvis, in concert and up close, in 1971!

1971 is a year that has not been documented as well as other years, when it comes to Elvis concert recordings, but this set, from the "Follow That Dream" label (which is a Godsend for Elvis fans!), helps to correct that issue, by giving us three concerts from '71. These are soundboard recordings of the concerts, as opposed to professional, multi-track, live recordings, so the sound quality is not always going to be as great, overall, as on the major live concert albums which Elvis released in his lifetime, but with that said, "Follow That Dream" is doing a great job for serious Elvis fans and collectors, by making these shows available to us, and in nice-looking sets, too! The recordings feature Elvis's vocals sounding very "close up," almost as if you were on stage with him, and he is definitely rocking! The band is great too, but certain instruments are easier to hear than others. James Burton's lead guitar is clear throughout, but you have to listen more closely to hear Jerry Scheff's bass guitar. Still, even with the sonic imperfections of these recordings, I'm very glad to have them as rare documents of Elvis and the TCB band live in '71. One other nice thing about this 3-CD set is that it does feature certain songs that Elvis did not perform very often in concert, such as "Only Believe," "Make The World Go Away, and "Snowbird." The set is also a great bargain, for the price I paid for it at the Graceland site, which was $39.98 for three concerts! Even though I can't quite give it the full five-star rating, this set is still very much worth buying, for serious Elvis concert fans and collectors. Four out of five stars for "Elvis: Las Vegas '71!"
